Budget Travel
Getting About on a Budget
There are plenty of resources on the internet to find budget methods of travel, whether it be by air, sea, rail or road. Planning your adventure holiday on a budget can give you the opportunity to experience a wide array of activities and challenges. Whether your interest is spotting polar bears in their natural habitat or trekking through tropical rainforests, or less challenging and leisurely pursuits, you will find that almost anything is possible and someone out there has probably already done it and can help you do it.
One thing that you should definitely consider is purchasing Student Discount Cards. They can be obtained from most travel agents who regularly deal with students, or online. The small outlay can more than make up for itself in the variety of discounts available; from transportation to entertainment and eating out. The website at www.studentabroad.com has comprehensive information about finding cheap accommodation, travel, and just about everything else.
Check out websites such as www.studentfreestuff.com and www.s-k-i-n-t.co.uk for discounts and free offers for students.
Traveling through Europe is inexpensive with an Inter Rail pass. The Inter Rail pass allows for travel in second class on an unlimited basis. It covers 30 countries in Europe and N. Africa, plus there is no age restriction on the pass.
The areas you can travel are divided into zones: Zone A covers the U.K. and Ireland. Zone B covers Sweden, Finland and Norway. Zone C covers Switzerland, Austria, Denmark and Germany. Zone D covers Hungary, Poland, Croatia, Czech Republic, Slovakia and Bosnia-Herzegovina. Zone E covers Belgium, Nethelands, Luxembourg and France. Zone F covers Morocco, Spain and Portugal. Zone G covers Turkey, Slovenia, Italy and Greece. Zone H covers Yugoslavia, Romania, the former Yugoslavian Republic of Macedonia and Bulgaria.
Prices vary depending upon age of the traveller, the period of travel and the number of zones you wish to travel through. There are three categories of pricing: ages up to 12 years, ages up to 26 years, and ages over 26 years, with the least expensive being the under 12 category and the most expensive for the over 26 category.
An Inter Rail pass will allow you to travel during a specified period within the countries you have selected (except for your own country of residence). You can travel in your own country of residence at a reduced rate upon showing a valid pass before the start of your journey.
The passes can be purchased at Rail Europe Direct by calling 08705 848 848, or online at www.raileurope.co.uk/inter-rail. Passes can also be bought at some travel agencies and major train stations.
